How It All Began


  • Amalgamation of two swimming clubs . Boys and Girls Institute and Gale Force.
  • Capital City Amateur Swimming Club was formed.
  • Club colours of electric blue, fluoro yellow and black adopted.
  • Training began at Freyberg Pool.
  • The original committee included Pam Edwards , Pat O’Neill (Chair), Susan Graham.
  • Rhonda Geary with Gary Hurring as head coach.


  • After a sponsorship deal with Fay Richwhite Enterprises the club adopted the name Fay Richwhite Capital City (FRCC).
  • Top Wellington club for the first time.


  • Junior squads begin training at Kilbirnie due to successful lobbying by then Club Chairman, Ray Hope.
  • Wellington’s top club / National ranking 9.


  • Club reverted back to its original name but shortened it to Capital Swim Club.
  • Still top Wellington club / National ranking 8 - Jon Winter represents NZ at Olympics.

1996 -2004

  • The club has continued to build on its foundation and has steadily worked its way up to a National ranking in the top three for the last four years and has remained Wellington’s top ranked club for the last twelve years.

2004 - 2009

  • Another important stage in the club development in 2007 with the amalgamation with local junior club TSW and the addition of new coaches based at Kilbirnie.
  • In 2008 Tash Hind became the club's second Olympian with selection to the Beijing Olympic team.
  • Still top Wellington club at every major meet and ranked in top three nationally.
  • The development of a High Performance Unit at Freyberg in 2009 with Danyon Loader joining Gary as an assistant.
