Capital in the lead after first round of Metro League 24/03/2015 11:21am

Capital swimmers featured strongly in the first round of the 2015 Metro League – the regional competition for our 12-year-old and under swimmers.

Capital entered two teams in round one which took place at Huia Pool in Lower Hutt on 15 March.

Coach Cliff Threadgold says “Both teams did very well, winning all but one race between them. The inter-club series is about representing your club and swimming for places to gain points. The swimmers selected to swim for Capital in this round did that very well."

The two Capital teams are currently sitting first and second on the points table with the Capital Blue on 396 and the Capital Yellow on 296.

Round two of the Metro League is on 17 May at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre.

Success for Capital at Juniors 24/02/2015 02:14pm

Capital’s young swimmers put in a fantastic effort at the 2015 New Zealand Junior Championships (20-23 February) to put the Club in fifth place overall – up from 18th last season.

Coach Cliff Threadgold says this was an amazing improvement and testament to the hard work the junior squads have done through the year.

“Capital had 22 swimmers competing, with most swimming personal best times in their events,” says Cliff.

“These improvements took many swimmers into a top ten placing where the Club scored points.

“Four of our swimmers shared 14 medals between them including five golds won by: Sophie Irving (two) Tamrah Titcombe (one) and Ben Stirling (two).

“The fourth medal winner was Gabriella Jacobs who collected the Bronze medal in an exciting 50m... more

Strong Capital contingent for Junior Nationals 07/02/2015 11:07pm

Twenty-two Capital swimmers have qualified for this year’s New Zealand Junior Championships being held at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre from 20-22 February.

Coach Cliff Threadgold says this is a significant achievement with the number of swimmers qualifying this year considerably higher than last year.

“The increase shows a great improvement at the junior level but is not totally unexpected,” says Cliff.

“At the beginning of the season our Director of Coaching Craig Albery sat down with Timon and myself and we studied the list of Junior swimmers in the Club and discussed how many we felt could qualify for the Championships.

“Craig challenged me to achieve a target of 15 swimmers to qualify for Juniors.  It was a tough target but I love a challenge... more

Following their recent success at the New Zealand Open Water Championships, Capital A Squad swimmers Liam Albery and Ben Ruback made the trip to Perth; Western Australia, to compete at The BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series Open Water event.

With a very impressive field including Olympians Daniel Fogg, Andrew Gemmell, Yasunari Hirai, Alex Meyer, Jarrod Poort, Andreas Washburger and Richard Weinberger they also pitched themselves against the crème de la crème of the Pacific Rim nations as well as a few of Europe’s top young athletes.

Also known as the 10km “swim the swan” the race had been labelled as the second most competitive elite 10km marathon race of the 2015 season; behind the 2015 FINA World Championships that are due to take place later in the year.
