Solid performances at NZ Junior Champs

Capital Swim Club was represented by 15 of its 12 years and under swimmers at the 2014 State New Zealand Junior Championships held in Wellington.

The girls: Alaynah Bettany, Sophie Irving, Maia Moe Jenkins, Caterina Moreno, Tallulah O'Neill, Kirstie Rae, Jenna Rolston-Larking, Sophia Tweddle and Hannah Van Kampen were joined by a boys’ team of Sam Brown, William Duggan, Joshua Hansen, Liam Iggo, Atakura Julian and Harry Stew. Collectively their performances placed the Club 18th out of 98 clubs.

Capital’s Director of Coaching Craig Albery said this was a very solid weekend of competition for the Club with our swimmers performing above the expectations of the coaching team, especially considering a few were competing at their first National event.

“This last year has seen a number changes to the way we are coaching our junior athletes,” said Craig.

“We expected to have only 10 qualify for the Junior Nationals so to have 15 represent the Club is testament to the hard work carried out by everyone.

“The Club had a number of “stand out” performances which in turn leads to an exciting time for the Club moving forward.

“We had a very good number of PBs, along with top ten and podium finishes. I would like to acknowledge the hard work undertaken by coaches Timon Wilkinson and Cliff Threadgold who both deserve a lot of credit.

“As a coaching team we are looking forward to this coming season,” said Craig. “We believe there is a lot more to come from our Capital swimmers.”

For the first time in many years, the Junior Championships were held at a single venue (the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre) in comparison to previous years when the event was held simultaneously at two or more pools across New Zealand.
