2015 Australian 10km Open Water Swimming Championships – Perth

Following their recent success at the New Zealand Open Water Championships, Capital A Squad swimmers Liam Albery and Ben Ruback made the trip to Perth; Western Australia, to compete at The BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series Open Water event.

With a very impressive field including Olympians Daniel Fogg, Andrew Gemmell, Yasunari Hirai, Alex Meyer, Jarrod Poort, Andreas Washburger and Richard Weinberger they also pitched themselves against the crème de la crème of the Pacific Rim nations as well as a few of Europe’s top young athletes.

Also known as the 10km “swim the swan” the race had been labelled as the second most competitive elite 10km marathon race of the 2015 season; behind the 2015 FINA World Championships that are due to take place later in the year.

In difficult conditions, American’s Andrew Gemmell and Alex Meyer took the gold and silver medals respectively with the bronze going to Britain’s Daniel Fogg.

Director of Coaching Craig Albery commented “this was valuable experience again for both Ben and Liam. The pace was really quick from the start and that took its toll towards the end of the race. They got stung a few times by the jellyfish too! But to be around this type of field and learning from the whole experience will be of great benefit to them moving forward.”

The race forms part of a two swim qualification process for the World Championships in Kazan as well as the University Games. Albery continued “with the way they have both performed, they have given themselves an opportunity to compete in this year’s World Cup series. Both looked comfortable in the lead pack for quite a while with Liam sitting in third place for the best part of 7km. I was really pleased with their performances.”
