Capital swimmers make their mark at Opens

Capital’s Emma Robinson led the way for the Club at the 2015 New Zealand Open Swimming Championships taking Silver in the 400m freestyle and qualifying for the World Champs in Kazan, Russia later this year.

The Opens were held at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Auckland from 14-17 April.

Robinson also took Silver in the 800m freestyle which gave her the qualifying time for Kazan, as well as a Bronze in the 200m freestyle.

Capital’s Samantha Lee also put in a top performance gaining Silver in all three butterfly events (50m, 100m and 200m) and third in the 100m freestyle.

Liam Albery took Bronze in the 800m freestyle after a fiercely contested race with Waterhole’s Phillip Ryan.

Director of Coaching Craig Albery commented “it was fantastic to watch Emma (Robinson) make the qualifying standard and therefore a place on the New Zealand team for the World Champs.

"We placed fifth overall which was better than our original expectation with us being a young inexperienced team.”

Albery added, “Samantha Lee also qualified for the World University Games and Liam (Albery) will have a shot at a couple of the FINA World Cup Open Water events later in the year.
