Robinson leads Lake Taupo Success

Capital Swim Club's Emma Robinson won both Gold and Silver medals at the recent State New Zealand Open Water Championships in Taupo. Robinson took the Silver in the 10km swim before winning the National 5km title the following day.

Joining her in the 5km swim were Capital swimmers Lauren Duggan, Nikki Chapman, Scarlett Tacon and Josie Kozyniak. All four girls were competing in their first Open Water swim with Kozyniak taking the Silver medal in the 13-15 year age group. In the lead pack throughout the race, the 15-year-old finished 6th overall in the New Zealand Open category.

Also competing in the 13-15 year category was Lauren Duggan who finished 5th whilst in the 16-17 year-olds, Tacon and Chapman placed 7th and 8th respectively.

Experienced Open Water and 2012 New Zealand Junior Pan Pacific swimmer Ben Ruback (18) also took part in both the 10 and 5km swims. He was joined in the 5km by Callum Sinclair. Ruback placed ninth overall, 8th in New Zealand, with Sinclair just missing out on a medal in his age group (16-17) with a strong 4th place.

In the 10km swim, Ruback swam impressively to place 7th in New Zealand. Like Sinclair, Capital swimmers Kieran Simpson, Hamish Trlin and Liam Albery were also competing in their first Open Water competition. Swimming in the 16-17 years category, Simpson finished 5th, Trlin placed fourth with Albery winning the Gold medal and National Age Group title as well as placing him 4th in New Zealand.
